Mara Baker & Rafael E. Vera: Rise over Run

Mara Baker & Rafael E. Vera: Rise over Run
Opening reception Saturday November 13th, 5pm – 9pm
Exhibition continues through 12/11/10 by appointment

The collaboration of Mara Baker and Rafael E. Vera grew out of a shared love for formal language, the process of drawing and their mutual backgrounds in site-specific installation.

Over the past year they have collaborated on a series of drawings entitled Trading Paper. The drawings explore basic ideas of structure and how it can morph, deconstruct, or be recreated. The drawing work was based in a slow exchange of ideas; which one artist started and the other finished.  Both artist’s made a conscious effort to treat each other’s drawings as a site from which to mine formal clues and create a visual conversation.

In Rise over Run their individual practices combine to create a site-specific installation. The work takes inspiration from the slope and imperfections (created by age and use) of the front porch at What-it-is. Utilizing common porch construction materials, pulleys and basic drafting tools, the work is a reflection and a response to the effect of time, weight and gravity.

Mara Baker is a Chicago based artist working in drawing/installation. Her work is inspired by histories – imagined and real, minuscule and epic, forgotten and memorialized.  She is a graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Art (MFA, 2007) and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (BFA, 2005).  Recent Exhibitions include: What Remains at The Soap Factory (Minneapolis, MN), Scavenger Constructs at Columbia College’s Glass Curtain Gallery (Chicago, IL), Centrifugal Force at Detroit Industrial Projects, (Detroit, MI) and With What We Can Carry at the Annex Art Center, (Toronto ON, Canada).

Rafael E. Vera is a Chicago-based 2-D and installation artist exploring architectural space and the contradictory nature of borders. Recent shows include Blank Banner at Benedictine University (Lisle, IL), Site-Unspecific at O’Connor Art Gallery (River Forest, IL) and Stacks at the Contemporary Art Workshop (Chicago, IL).  He received his MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Painting and Drawing. He holds additional training from the architecture program at Rafael Urdaneta University and the painting program at Julio Arraga School of Plastic Arts both in Maracaibo, Venezuela.
